The Reason For Using Wood Is Simple

Wood is a renewable resource and our wooden key cards are made from 98 percent unaltered plant material. But there’s more. Forests play a critical role in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO
2) from the environment. CO
2 is the primary chemical compound responsible for the greenhouse effect and global warming. By harvesting mature trees and then replacing them with saplings, sustainable forestry actually reverses CO
2 emissions.
This is the simple premise behind Sustainable Cards. We obtain our wood from sustainably managed forests. Europe has more managed, certified forests than anywhere else in the world. These forests rely upon replacing mature trees with new trees to absorb CO
2. As for the harvested timber, the CO
2 absorbed during maturation of the timber is locked in the wood fibers for the life of the material.
Creating a Carbon Sink
Healthy, growing trees have a negative CO2 balance. To maintain a negative carbon balance, old or mature trees have to be harvested and new trees must be planted. Dead and dying timber emits CO2. Using mature or dying trees to produce wood products locks the CO2 in the timber. In short, using wood creates a positive effect for the environment called carbon sink.
Reducing Carbon Sources
Sustainable forestry management reduces greenhouse gasses. As you can see from the graph, materials other than wood have carbon emissions. By making and purchasing things made from wood, we minimize the need for products that are manufactured from carbon-emitting steel, concrete or plastic.
